THE POOL
ITS INCEPTION AND DESIGN
The pool was designed with the idea of giving a person a sense of oneness with a natural setting, a truly relaxing environment that has a sense of nature or nurturing, something like being enveloped in a peaceful lagoon. We have one such place here in Belize to use as a model, the Inland Blue Hole. The shape and color of that place were the inspiration for the pool.
There is a relationship that can be proven with numbers that gives rise to a series of shapes and dynamics that appear throughout nature and which can be directly translated into rules of proportion to be used by designers. Furthermore, this principle of harmony has been acknowledged as a fundamental spiritual truth for centuries and its relationship as relates to our daily lives is seen in the proportion of our very own bodies.
It is expressed numerically in an equation that is called Phi.
Phi = 1 + the square root of 5 divided by 2
If Phi is the whole of anything, in this case the pool, then the proportions that are used to give the distinct design will be in this numerical proportion.
One part is 1 and the other part is 1.61803. This is the divine proportion.
The deeper part of the pool up to the grayish sand colored tile is designated as “B” The shallow part of the pool including the grayish sand colored & all the light tile is “C” The whole pool is “A”
Here is the formula. Phi (harmonious proportion)= A divided by B = B divided by C
In other words, B is to A (the whole) as C is to B
Here are the actual numbers
- A has 6392 units of area (the whole pool)
- B has 3950 units of area
- C has 2440 units of area
Go ahead. Do the math using the equation.
- 6392 divided by 3950 = 1.618
- 3950 divided by 2440 = 1.618
The numbers prove the proportions are in harmony with proportions that are used over and over in our world, in nature, the Parthenon, the Great Pyramids and the chambered nautilus just to name a few. Roses, hurricanes and the Ark of the Covenant were designed using the Devine Proportion.
